Elder Information Center
For the health and wellbeing of women aged 60+
The Elder Information Center is a first of its kind space focused on promoting discussion, learning, and mobilization around subjects concerning the health and wellbeing of women aged 60+. The Center serves as a hub to support the cultivation of new and innovative ideas and projects, as well as for building partnerships between women and other stakeholders in the fields of academia, medicine, social care, NGOs, business, policy and other decision makers. The Center is unique in its ability to integrate theory and practical knowledge, produced by and for women, and thereby addressing needs identified on the ground. The Center is a space that brings together professionals from a wide range of disciplines to explore issues around women’s health and wellbeing in our senior years, from a feminist perspective.
Why did we establish the Center?
As with many of WTB’s projects, the need for the Center arose from listening to the voices on the ground, as we realized the extent to which women’s lived experiences around their health and wellbeing in the later years are all but silenced.
These insights were gathered through WTB’s work on the ground, including workshops and seminars we offer to communities of women all across Israel in Hebrew, Arabic, Russian and Amharic. To read more about our workshops please click here.
In our field work, we hear directly from women who share their experiences and thoughts regarding body image, sickness and health, life partners, sexuality and intimacy, complex relationships with family members, as well as with medical systems and services. The Center aims to provide much needed information on all these topics, to challenge and change existing perceptions about women of this age group, and raise awareness both for women and their service providers.
We established the Center because we believe that being an elder woman is a different experience to being an elder man – and we are in need of a feminist approach that takes into account women’s life experiences, their unique needs, and their voices.
The quotes below are from women aged 60+ who participated in WTB workshops and activities:
• “At my age, I really don’t care anymore what anyone thinks of me! It’s very liberating”
• “Over time, I’ve reached a point that is good for me, and I know that I have a lot to give”
• “I never needed to rest, I was always running from one thing to the next, now I need to rest”
